A new challenge

I'm following the DPS board and they have a cool challenge up this week so I thought we could participate in our own little way over here...

The Challenge:

Over the next few days set yourself this little challenge.

1. Choose a single focal length. If you have a prime lens use it - if you don’t choose a zoom lens and commit to only using it at one end of its range.

2. Photograph 10 people - with each person only take a single shot.

3. Share your 10 shots with us. The easiest way is probably to upload your 10 shots to a Flickr account (or some other photo sharing site) and then group them all together into one group - share the link to that group in comments below.

Why this challenge?

The power of this kind of challenge is that it forces you to think before you shoot.

  • Not having the liberty of using a zoom means you need to consider the impact of using the focal length you’ve chosen. It forces YOU to move around your subject rather than to let your lens do the work.
  • Having only 1 shot per person means you need to think about your shot - it’s composition, the light, your exposure, the framing etc.
  • Showing us your images helps us all to learn. I’d love to not only see your images but to hear a little about how you found the exercise. What did you learn? What would you do differently?

After watering the plants....

These were all taken with my 50 mm lens and a 4x closeup lens.

Wet

Let's do something a little different. With all the planting we are doing right now and the warmer weather, there's bound to be some opportunity to get pictures of wet things. Have fun but try not to get too wet!

Three Of One

I recently tried my hand at gardening for the first time - here are three shots of the same flower!

Pretty spring colors

Not too much macro...

...but a bit. This one is of a plum (sloe) bush in our backyard. Note the killer thorns it has - I have more scratches from those things!

Wait!

Okay...first here's my action shot. I tried to take some leaving the shutter speed open but didn't have my neutral density lens with me and the sun was so bright. The longest I could leave it open was 1/25th of a second and the aperture was at 29...

Natural Macro

Now that the weather's nice around here, lets get some macro (close-up) shots of the buds/flowers out there. I have some beautiful bleeding hearts in my backyard...
